Don Flays Neglect of Solid Minerals Sector Kwara From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin A professor of Geology, Prof. Marufu Rahaman, yesterday called on Federal Government to use the excess of the crude oil proceeds to develop the solid minerals sector of the economy. Delivering a paper on "Nigeria's Solid Mineral Endowment and Sustainable Development" at the 2nd Mosobalaje Oyawoye Endowed Faculty of Science Lecture, University of Ilorin, Rahaman called on Federal Government to demonstrate a strong political will for the accelerated development of solid minerals in the country. According to him, solid mineral sector had suffered neglect because of the availability of easy funds from the oil sector. He suggested that government could demonstrate its interest to developing the sector by enacting a law, making it mandatory to spend between 3 and 5 per cent of proceeds from oil on the sector. He criticised plan by Federal Government to share half of the oil windfall with state governments, saying instead of sharing the excess proceeds, it could be used to develop the solid mineral sector. "The three tiers of government have budgets approved for this year already, so what would they do with the extra money. There are projects in the solid mineral sector crying out for investment and which on completion would create meaningful employment, help to reduce poverty, stem urban migration and reduce conflicts and tension in the country.
