We’ll resist Obasanjo ‘with our blood’ —Wada Nas
MOHAMMED KABIR, Kano
NIGERIANS will resist "with
their blood," any attempt to give President Olusegun Obasanjo a third
consecutive four-year term in office, a former Special Duties Minister, Alhaji
Wada Nas has said.
Alhaji Nas, national president of the Peoples Salvation Party
(PSP) claimed to have uncovered a plot by federal and state legislators to
facilitate such a move.
According to him, the National Assembly
and state Houses of Assembly are "central" to an alleged plot to facilitate
Chief Obasanjo’s stay in power beyond 2007 when his second term ends.
Speaking in Kano, he said Nigerians would
rise up to resist any such attempt.
But Alhaji Nas was silent on his role as
Special Duties Minister to Gen. Sani Abacha who as military dictator (1993-98)
sought to transmute to a civilian president using the only five teleguided
registered political parties.
Alhaji Nas was central in that scheme and
was in fact, the scourge of critics of that brutal regime.
But he alleged on Friday that moves were
on to facilitate the president’s third term through a constitutional amendment
that must be ratified by the federal and state parliaments.
"There is no doubt that the national and
state assemblies are central to the plot to change the constitution to favour
Obasanjo’s possible stay in Aso Rock beyond 2007 and once the constitution is
changed and he scale through, the international community will accept it," he
claimed.
"Our legislators all over the country must
be careful not to throw Nigeria into a turmoil as presently, nobody can predict
its consequences."
Alhaji Nas emphasized that, "for sure, any
attempt, through dubious constitutional changes, or whatever means, including
the fomenting of trouble, in order for Obasanjo to continue to misrule Nigeria,
for another five years, after 2007, would definitely be resisted no matter the
forces behind the misguided plans."
"It is futile for any one to think that
all Nigerians are that docile, therefore those devising strategies for Obasanjo
do not want this country to remain in peace," he said.
"Obasanjo is honour bound to respect the
constitution and the vow he made for his own good and that of the country," he
said.
