Okadigbo’s aides under security watch

•Royal father petitions United Nations

IHEANACHO NWOSU, Lagos

TOP aides of former Senate President and vice-presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Dr. Chuba Okadigbo are under security surveillance and are facing possible prosecution for undisclosed offences, it has been alleged.

As a result, a community leader in Ogbunike, Oyi local government area of Anambra State Chief John Nwokolo has called on the United Nations (UN) to prevail on the Federal Government to desist from a planned persecution of aides of the late politician, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, a prominent son of Oyi.

Speaking to Sunday Champion in Lagos, Chief Nwokolo alleged that since the death in 2003 of the politician, following his outing at a rally in Kano organised by the ANPP, persons suspected to be agents of government have constantly visited Ogbunike and have subjected some of his aides to embarrassing scrutiny.

According to him, such agents, who are usually dressed in suits, had on one occasion trailed some of the late politician’s aides to their residences outside Ogbunike, threatening to make life difficult for them.

Chief Nwokolo alleged that one of the top aides to the late politician, Mr. Tony Igweze, has had to dump the country and his family, for an unknown country, in fear of what might be the outcome of such constant harassment.

"Honestly, I do not know what they want. They have always been around and have made people feel unsafe. The report we have now is that one of our kinsmen, Tony Igweze, who was an aide to the late Oyi of Oyi, has had to abandon his family here. Where he has gone to, we do not know," he said.

Chief Nwokolo also called on the Nigerian authorities to allow aides of the late politician some respite adding that constant harassment will yield no dividend.
