DAILY HEADLINES Why I accepted Obasanjo's committee offer —OSHIOMHOLE By Austin Ogwuda Monday, October 18, 2004 ASABA — PRESIDENT of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says his decision to serve on the presidential committee set up to proffer palliatives to the effects of the latest hike in the prices of petroleum products was informed by possible misinterpretation of his non-acceptance to be a member. He said he might be labelled “a war monger” if he had declined to serve. Speaking to reporters at Ibusa, Delta State at the burial of Mrs. Agnes Izeze, mother of Mr. Emeka Izeze, Managing Director of The Guardian newspapers, Oshiomhole said his serving in that committee would not in any way divert his attention from NLC’s set goal. He said: “Yes, we have suspended the strike but that is not all. Our National Executive Committee (NEC) will be meeting in two weeks to appraise the development. Let me tell you, if the pump price is not reversed by the time we are meeting in two weeks, then we will come out with the next phase, just wait and see. We are prepared to return to strike. There is no going back. This time around, we won’t let go as in the past. We are ready to march force with force because there is need to sustain that struggle.” Earlier on his arrival at the Izeze family compound at Ogboli Quarters, Ibusa, Oshiomhole received a thunderous ovation from the gathering. The funeral was attended by a galaxy of personalities from across the country.
