Lagos AD opposes Ogunlewe's plan to rebuild demolished toll gates

Monday, October 18, 2004

LAGOS— LAGOS state chapter of the Alliance for Democracy has opposed the proposal of Federal Works Minister, Seye Ogunlewe to re-build the toll-gates demolished in the wake of the fuel tax policy, saying it demonstrates the minister’s incompetence and lack of foresight.

Reacting to reports credited to the Minister of Works that the Federal Government intends to send a Road Bill that will include request to rebuild the toll-gates and construct roads with the Build, Operate and Transfer arrangement, Lagos AD Publicity Secretary Toyin Caxton-Martins in a statement said it will amount to waste of the nation’s resources if the National Assembly endorses the re-construction of the toll- gates. She noted that the proposal demonstrates the shoddy thinking that goes into the making of government policies at the federal level.

According to her, “Ogunlewe wants to take Nigerians for a ride. Up till now, he has not given any account of how much he spent to destroy the toll-gates; he has not told Nigerians when the Federal Government will return the illegally collected N1.50 fuel tax to the respective states where the unsuspecting consumers inadvertently paid the extortion. In fact if this goes through, he will once again make the nation pay for his lack of clear thinking. The AD will resist any attempt to impose the financial burden of building new toll-gates on Nigerians".

Also reacting to the new policy of Build, Operate and Transfer, AD said Ogunlewe should apologise to the Governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu whose plan to build roads with the BOT system as far back as 2001, was viciously attacked by Ogunlewe and the PDP Federal Government.
