AKURE—ONDO State government said weekend that 1.5million cocoa seedlings would be raised and distributed to farmers as part of its efforts to revolutionarise cocoa production and quality in the state.
Over 500,000 cocoa seedlings were distributed to farmers free of charge by the state government recently.
The agriculture Commissioner, Deacon Ayo Ifayefunmi who stated this in Akure noted that with the government’s plan, farmers in the state will soon heave a sign of relief.
Deacon Ifayefunmi while inaugurating the new caretaker committee of the cocoa farmers association of Nigeria however kicked against sharp practices in the production of the commodity which has greatly affected its quality.
The commissioner said that the sharp practices by farmers had brought about decline in the quality and prices of the commodity.
He however assured that the state government would organise a workshop to educate and enlighten the farmers on the dangers of poor quality of cocoa production.
Speaking on the crisis in the association, the commissioner said that the removal of the past leadership received the blessing of the Federal Government and the 14 cocoa producing states of the federation.
Deacon Ifayefunmi advised the caretaker committee to work assiduously to put the house in order in the interest of the farmers and the association.
The national president of the association, Chief Henry Akingbulugbe said that the change in the leadership of the association was to salvage it from imminent collapse. Chief Akingbulugbe accused the former leadership of the association of bad management which was against the constitution of the association.
Also speaking, the commissioner for agriculture in Ekiti State, Chief Boboye Olanipekun pleaded with the farmers to cooperate with the new leadership of the association.
