Why there are political crises in Nigeria—JUDGE ALOBO

By Godwin Akor
Monday, October 18, 2004

MAKURDI — A Lagos State High Court Judge and Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that investigated the Political Crises in Kwande and Ukum local government areas of Benue State, Justice Kazeem Alobo, says lust for power is responsible for most of the political crises in Nigeria. Alobo who stated  this while recounting his experience as Chairman of the Commission, observed that “if service to the people is the purpose for which people seek for power, there will be no crises because such people will not destroy if they fail to clinch power”. He noted that those who believe in God do not destroy but those who believe in what they can get through power easily take to violence.

He said as Chairman of the Commission, his assignment was amorphous while his assignment in the court was specified. Alobo noted further that in the court, the judge could sentence based on the facts before him but the chairman of a judicial commission of inquiry on political crises cannot just do that because he must preserve the society by ensuring that the people continue to live together. Justice Alobo maintained that though he learnt a lot about politicians in the course of his assignment in Benue state, no one should have the impression that only politicians appeared before the commission.

“We did not sit based on political parties but on the basis of the violence that occurred in the two local governments. May I also emphasise that crises did not only take place between members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but also between individuals and groups not linked to any political party”, he clarified. According to him, the agitation showed by the people of Jato-Aka when the commission visited the area was not due to rejection but their belief in what they called change. He lamented that the people of the area missed a lot as they were not able to interact with the commission to express their grievances due to the behaviour of the youths.
