KOKO — THE Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC) has welcomed what it sees as President Olusegun Obasanjo's new approach to the Niger Delta question, saying “while it identifies with such demands as resource control, sovereign national conference and self-determination, among others, the views and positions of the Itsekiri could only be put forward and discussed by the representatives of the Itsekiri within the context of their experience, peculiarity and history.”
INYC in a statement at the end of a two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of representatives from all the branches in the three Warri local government areas of Warri North, Warri South and Warri South-West said “as such, any attempt to handle such issues under the auspices of a future Niger Delta representatives or any other group is unacceptable to the Itsekiri.”
The Itsekiri youths said the proposed committee promised by President Obasanjo, should be set up for each oil bearing ethnic group in view of “our past and present experience whereby the Itsekiri nation which nationally is the second oil-bearing ethnic group (after the Ijaw) have always been short-changed by the hawks in the Niger Delta, who are themselves more oppressive and vicious than the Nigerian state,” adding that the Itsekiri nation should have their development committee that should handle their problem.
The youths urged the Ijaw to also have a re-think about their present relationship with the Itsekiri and particularly to call to order the hawks in their midst whose survival largely depend on how many wars they can foment between the Ijaw and Itsekiri, noting however, "with satisfaction some of the demands reportedly made by the leadership of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) which include resource control, sovereign national conference and self-determination".
They observed that these demands long canvassed by the INYC and now re-invigorated by the NDPVF have the potential of soothing the acrimony between the Ijaw and Itsekiri.
