UMUAHIA — A MEETING of a group which calls itself South East Caucus on Igbo presidency for 2007 was held in Umuahia at the weekend without taking any decision. The Umuahia meeting which was at the instance of maverick politician and South East Caucus leader in the Senate, Chief Arthur Nzeribe was held behind closed doors. The participants spent about three hours at the Aguiyi Ironsi Conference Centre and no communique was issued at the end of the meeting. There were only a handful of Igbo politicians and clergy men in attendance which gave the impression that the participants were handpicked.
Apart from Senator Nzeribe who was believed to be the facilitator, others in attendance included Senator Chris Adighije representing Abia Central in the Senate, Senator Uche Chukwumerije representing Abia North, Senator Emma Anosike from Anambra State, Francis Orji from Ebonyi State and a female member of House of Representatives from that state. Also in attendance were chairman of Abia State advisory council Dr. Anagha Ezeikpe, Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia, Most Rev Rogers Uwadi and a representative of the Anglican Church.
Nzeribe declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting when they emerged and merely stated that “the meeting achieved its purpose. “The participants were later conveyed in a bus belonging to the Abia State House of Assembly to a hotel in Umuahia where Senator Adighije told journalists that the participants were satisfied with the outcome of the meeting. According to him, the caucus was bent on ensuring that the Igbo presidency would be a reality, adding that members of the caucus would tour the states in the South East geo-political zone on a fact-finding mission. Asked if the participants have taken into consideration the antecedents of Senator Nzeribe before allowing him to be the leader for an important assignment of this nature, Adighije expressed implicit confidence in the Oguta-born three-time senator to work for the good of Igbos.
Speculations were however rife that Nzeribe might be working for himself in the presidential project or may have other agenda that would startle Nigerians when the details begin to unfold.
