the said clash between Senators Iyabode Anisulowo (Ogun) and Isa Mohammed
(Niger), Governor Abdulkadir Kure of Niger State at the weekend visited the
Abuja residence of Senator Anisulowo to plead on behalf of the latter
(Mohammed).
Some Senators are said to be pushing for
Mohammed’s suspension when the chamber deliberates on the matter tomorrow even
as the South-West parliamentary caucus convened an emergency meeting today on
the issue.
Senator Mohammed last Thursday allegedly
slapped the female Senator and former Minister of State for Education over the
handling of the sum of N1.2 million belonging to the Senate Committee on States
and local governments of which she is chairman and Mohammed, her deputy.
But, Mohammed has denied the charge of
slapping her.
Anisulowo was said to have queried the
committee secretary, one Mr Lawal, for allegedly giving N500,000 of the
committee’s funds to her deputy without recourse to due process.
Allegedly angered by the said query,
Senator Mohammed had after a heated argument reportedly slapped her, leading to
a clash.
Thus, Governor Kure, in company of the
minister of state for Foreign Affairs, Alhaji M. Tanko at the weekend visited
Senator Anisulowo’s house to ask for forgiveness and " beg her over the matter".
Sources close to the state government told
Daily Champion that the meeting which held behind closed doors was "just
to beg Senator Anisulowo for forgiveness and drop her bid to seek legal action".
However, competent sources in the Senate
told Daily Champion that the "Senate will deliberate on the issue
tomorrow and women senators are pushing for Senator Mohammed’s suspension".
It was also gathered that the South-West
parliamentary caucus led by Deputy Senate Majority Whip, Clement Awoyelu will
convene "an emergency meeting today to take a position on the matter".
It was learnt that Senator Anisulowo is
bent on pressing legal charges against Mohammed.
