Obasanjo orders delivery of inter-state mails in 48 hours
From Bertram Nwannekanma, Osogbo
DISSATISFIED with the services rendered by the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST), which had been identified as the reason for its low patronage, President Olusegun Obasanjo has given it a new mandate to deliver inter-state mails within 48 hours.
The new mandate, which was an improvement on the earlier 72-hour maximum for inter-state deliveries, was contained in an address by the Post Master General of the Federation, Alhaji Abubakar Musa Argungu, which was delivered by the Area Postal Manager, Osun Territory, Pat Onuekwusi, in Osogbo during this year's World Post Day.
Argungu said the service was committed to rendering qualitative and customer-responsive services to the people at reasonable costs, which would be "second to none in Africa."
He lamented that despite all the efforts to improve services, patronage had remained low.
NIPOST, he assured, was more determined than ever before to play its role in the socio-economic and political development of the country.
He urged Nigerians to reciprocate government's "magnanimity" and also to offset their debts.
The World Post Day is held yearly by countries, which are member of the Universal Postal Union and provide occasion for accessing postal delivery services of member countries.
