Suspected vandals destroy NITEL cables in Abuja
From Bethrand Nwankwo, Abuja
SUSPECTED vandals have destroyed the Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) optic fibre cable linking the firm's new corporate Headquarters at the Central Business District Area in Abuja with the Wuse exchange.
A statement from the NITEL Deputy General Manager and signed by Sule Shehu said the incident was first noticed on Friday night through an alarm in the transmission room at Wuse exchange.
According to the statement, on observing the alarm, NITEL staff went on patrol of the cable distribution route and discovered that some manholes had been opened.
It stated that on inspection, officials found that the optic fibre cables had been cut along Tafawa Balewa Way. Further investigations, the statement added, also reveal another cut on the installation towards Bank of the North on Ahmadu Bello Way in the Central Business District area of the FCT.
The vandals carted away all the cables, which is over one kilometre in length and the estimated cost is yet to be established. Management suspects sabotage. Security operatives have been alerted with the hope that the culprits will be tracked down, the statement added.
It added: "NITEL Management appeals to the general public to help protect all its installations and to report any suspected movements to the nearest NITEL office or the law enforcement agencies".
