Imo police chief arrests 10 officers for alleged extortion
From Charles Ogugbuaja, Owerri
NEMESIS may have caught up with 10 police officers serving in Imo State at the weekend as they were arrested by the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Hezekiah Dimka, for allegedly extorting money from commercial drivers and other members of the public.
Dimka, who was on a supervisory patrol duty, stormed various check-points where police officers were caught extorting money from motorists.
The police commissioner disclosed to The Guardian that the trial of the officers has begun, stating that it is likely they would lose their jobs at the end of the exercise.
He said there was enough evidence to indict them over the alleged offence.
Dimka, who recently arrested a syndicate of child kidnappers in Imo State, said such an unscheduled visits to police check-points would continue.
He added that the state command was determined to get rid of police officers who were denting the image of the force in the state.
His words: "As I was going on an unscheduled patrol of police check-points, I caught ten officers who were extorting money and collecting bribe from people," he said.
Dimka added: "As I am talking with you now, they are already undergoing trial according to the rules. They may lose their jobs. This will serve as a deterrent to others who are in the habit of denting the image of the police.
"We are always worried when members of the public report this kind of act to us."
He noted that more strategies would be evolved to apprehend all those who extort money from law-abiding citizens.
Meanwhile, the state's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chike Nwabuowa, has warned officers who are dubious to change their ways or be shown the way out of the force.
Also, in a statement in Owerri, the state Commissioner of Police has resolved to stamp out criminals from the system.`
