Saraki urges support for Obasanjo's reforms
From Abiodun Fagbemi, Ilorin

GOVERNOR Bukola Saraki of Kwara State has described the economic policies of President Olusegun Obasanjo as inevitable.
He said they were compelled by economic mismanagement of various governments in the country.

In a Ramadan (fasting) message to Moslems at the weekend, Saraki said the hardship associated with the reforms would be short-lived after which a booming dispensation would emerge.

He said: "I advise all Nigerians to give the on-going economic reforms a chance. They may be painful, but certainly inevitable. The government is indeed aware of the pains experienced by Nigerians.

"The reforms are necessary to correct the mistakes, the neglects and the mismanagement of the past. An alternative cause will amount to pushing forward the day of reckoning."
The governor, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tajudeen Kareem, urged Moslems to be guided by sobriety, supplication to God, discipline and concern for the less privileged during and after the fasting period.

Saraki said that God would not abandon Nigeria as a nation. He urged the citizens to be prayerful and persevere to enable the leaders turn around the economy.

However, with the start of Ramadan, the prices of food stock in Ilorin the state capital have risen. Worst hits are fruits usually consumed during the period.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, Dr. Olusola Ajolore, has urged the Moslems community to utilise the fasting period to reflect on peace, love and progress.
