Provost blames social vices on religious leaders
FOR the Provost, Lagos College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Prof. Hussein Abdulkareem, the increasing social vices in the country are caused by religious leaders.
Abdulkareem blamed the trend on the leaders who had turned away from preaching the truth to increasing their fortunes.
He said this at the 10th Pre-Ramadan lecture of the University of Lagos Moslem Alumni at the weekend.
The provost who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oye Ibadapo-Obe, on the occasion, urged Moslems to take the benefit of Ramadan to extend the spirit of brotherhood among other fellow citizens for continued unity of the country.
In a lecture titled "The Moslem Umma and the Challenges of Unity", the National Missioner of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, Ustaz Abdulraham Ahmad, said unity had become a mirage because of the love for luxury and pleasure that made people shy away from Allah's injunctions. He added that Ramadan was not meant to bring hardship on the people but to purify their minds towards understanding Allah better.
He also stressed the need for a strategic alliance among Moslems for them to contribute meaningfully to the quest for the rediscovery of a better Nigeria.
According to the President of the Moslem Alumni, Lekan Bello, Ramadan fast is a moral discipline that makes man to have dominion over all evil tendencies.
