Recognise traditional religion

SIR: I congratulate Nigerians on the happy celebration of 44 years of independence. May Eledumare in his infinity mercy lead Nigeria to the Promised Land.

I am writing on behalf of all traditionalists, the real and root religion which is our own true religion before the advent of other religions, to draw the attention of our President, Chief Olusegun Okikiola Obasanjo and other governors in the federation. There is need to really extend our own fundamental human rights especially the right to worship by giving the traditionalists, a special day as public holiday as is the case with Moslems and Christians. What is good for the goose, if not better, is also good for the gander.

It is incontrovertible fact of history that we the traditionalists exercised our franchise by voting massively for the government in power. If we do perform our own civil rights by voting, then we should have our own direct dividends of democracy. I am suggesting Annual Oke Tase Pilgrimage to Ile-Ife as a source of Yoruba tradition for public holiday. Oke Tase is performed on first Saturday of every June. We will not mind if the holiday could be Friday or Monday to create awareness and interest among the traditionalists.

Also, at the federal level, we only have Prof. Wande Abimbola as our symbol and he is truly a pride to us. But why Prof. Abimbola alone? We have other elite among the traditionalists who have the wherewithal to serve this country faithfully. We expect the Federal Government under President Obasanjo to consider other traditionalists; state governments should do so too. We believe in the Federal Government, state and local governments as directed by Ifa to really accept our leaders as they are.
May Eledumare grant all our leaders at Federal, state and local levels the traditional wisdom of Orunmila. We once again appeal on behalf of others to government to recognise traditional religion in the scheme of things. We are peace-loving and we abide by the supreme constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Fakayode Faniyi,
Agbongbon Awo of Osogboland,
Osogbo, Osun State`
