Tribute to Juliet Dixon

SIR: The death of Mrs. Juliet Nkiruka Dixon on Monday, October 11, 2004 at the age of 49 years hit us like a bunker buster. The narrative of her life touched us in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in ways more than many. She was our own Princess Diana. Her life was marked by an engaging communicative energy and a passionate humanism whether it was in the road safety club, NFCS Awo Hall, Kegites, human trafficking, peace between Ife and Modakeke, Alumni relations, the cause of justice, charities, indigent students.

Quite a number of OAU alumni are what they are today in the society because of the munificence of the late Mrs. Dixon. Was it her uncommon flair to dispel student's anxieties and personal troubles? Her listening ears? Her fervent heart? Her gorgeous countenance? Her motherly advice? Her office and home that are open to all anytime (I really mean it anytime even after midnight)? For her, a person's sex, religious inclination, social status and tribe never mattered. She was a rear specie. And very brave. Sighting a genuine cause, she pursued it with the insistence of Moses' speech to Pharaoh.

She was never ever afraid to speak out even when popular sensibilities are the contrary. And she never compromised. Her charm, wit, courage, charisma and selflessness are a testimony to her greatness. Where people like Mrs. J.N. Dixon is a matter of fact, there is still hope for the world. Her name is forever chiselled in our minds with golden fonts.

  • There is only one home to the life of a river mussel;
    There is only one home to the life of the tortoise;
    There is only one home to the deeds of a Diana;
    There is only one shell to the soul of truth:
    There is only one heaven to the spirit of your sort.

    Good night Great Ife's Rose...

    She was survived by her husband, Professor Ayodele Dixon, children and grand children.

    Damola Awoyokun,
    Ibadan, Oyo State
