CBN boosts varsities with N435m

By Tom Chiahemen

Senior Correspondent, Abuja

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has spent more than N435 million on the provision of amenities to federal universities to ease the pains of under-funding facing them.

A senior CBN official, Mr. A. G. Ehilebo, said this when he led a team of inspectors from the bank to the Computer Resource Centre that the bank was building at the Federal University of Technology, Akure in Ondo State

The latest edition of the Nigerian University System Chronicle, a quarterly publication of the National Universities Commission (NUC), quoted Ehilebo as expressing the concern of the CBN Governor, Charles Soludo, about the state of infrastructure decay in the universities.

Ehilebo spoke of the banks willingness to do everything to assist the institutions to overcome some of their basic infrastructure problems, adding that he was satisfied with the level of work at the centre and praised the management of FUT Akure for the judicious use of the money made available for the project.

He said it was the desire of the CBN that the project be completed and commissioned for use without delay.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Adeniyi, praised the CBN for coming to the aid of the institution, saying for two years running, government had not made capital grant available to the university.

Adeniyi assured the CBN that the resource centre would be ready for commissioning soon, as the computers required for use had already been bought. He appealed to the apex bank to extend the same gesture to state universities.
