Germany tasks Nigeria on menace of street urchins

By Onyekachi Eze

Senior Reporter, Abuja

The government of Germany has urged Nigeria to adopt effective measures to deal with the growing phenomenon of street urchins called Almajiri in the northern parts of the country to avoid a crisis in future.

German Commissioner for Dialogue with the Islamic World, Dr. Gunter Mulack, said in Abuja at the end of his one-week familiarisation tour of states in the North that, When you see all these boys running around and begging; Muslim boys who were sent away by their families to fend for themselves, it is extremely bad and it is un-Islamic.

It is a tradition that is against all principles of human behaviour and against all principles of Muslim teachings. It is something that you are facing and which is a big problem at least for your country and if the state does not provide for these street children to give them some future, it will be a very big problem and it will cause more bloodshed and unrests in your country, Mulack warned.

The commissioner urged the government to strive to always ensure peaceful resolution of any disagreement that may arise between the Christian and Muslim population in future.

He attributed the increasing religious unrests all over the world to frustration and anger being experienced by the population due to the absence of good democratic governance, acute illiteracy, poverty and other socio-economic problems.

The German envoy disagreed with the military solution adopted by America against terrorism, arguing that Islam was not synonymous with terrorism as people were being made to believe. He said Germany was interested in raising development standards in the Islamic world and elsewhere for the security of all the citizens of the world through educational and training co-operation projects.

During his one-week tour, Mulack visited Muslim-dominated cities of Kano, Kaduna and Zaria where he held meetings with religious, political and traditional rulers, including the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
