World Bank, ADB support
Fadama with N18.2b

The World
Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB) have supported the Second
Fadama Development Project with N18.2 billion ($130 million).
World Bank
Country Director, Mr. Hafex Ghanem, said at the launch of the Fadama
Project in Bauchi State that the project is significant because it marks
the celebration of the successful completion of a long preparation
process.
He added
that the World Bank has, through the project, succeeded in building a
strong local participation in the project to include 19 other states
waiting to be part of the Fadama movement.
Hafez said
the World Bank and the ADB were proud partner with the government in
preparing this project and that this would serve as instrument to address
poverty reduction.
The bank
director praised the collective decisions of African heads of state to
allocate 10 per cent of their national budgets to agricultural sector,
saying this would greatly boost food production in the
continent.
He said
with the commitment of the Federal Government towards agriculture, he
looked forward to a better cooperation so as to explore opportunities in
the framework of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy
(NEEDS) and the bank�s country assistance strategy.
The
director gave assurance that the bank would deploy the effort needed to
respond to these challenges and to ensure that the project impact more on
the rural people.
The
Resident Representative of the ADB, Mr. Zondo Sakala, said the bank
through the African Development Fund provided interest free loan amounting
to US $30 million.
Sakala said
the bank was particularly pleased to be a contributor to financing the
project, adding that the project was in line with the key priority of
rejuvenation of the agricultural sector.
He said the
country office would be reinforced with the arrival of additional
international and national staff, explaining that it would improve their
capacity to assist various ministries and agencies with
implementation.
