The World Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB) have supported the Second Fadama Development Project with N18.2 billion ($130 million).

World Bank Country Director, Mr. Hafex Ghanem, said at the launch of the Fadama Project in Bauchi State that the project is significant because it marks the celebration of the successful completion of a long preparation process.

He added that the World Bank has, through the project, succeeded in building a strong local participation in the project to include 19 other states waiting to be part of the Fadama movement.

Hafez said the World Bank and the ADB were proud partner with the government in preparing this project and that this would serve as instrument to address poverty reduction.

The bank director praised the collective decisions of African heads of state to allocate 10 per cent of their national budgets to agricultural sector, saying this would greatly boost food production in the continent.

He said with the commitment of the Federal Government towards agriculture, he looked forward to a better cooperation so as to explore opportunities in the framework of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS) and the banks country assistance strategy.

The director gave assurance that the bank would deploy the effort needed to respond to these challenges and to ensure that the project impact more on the rural people.

The Resident Representative of the ADB, Mr. Zondo Sakala, said the bank through the African Development Fund provided interest free loan amounting to US $30 million.

Sakala said the bank was particularly pleased to be a contributor to financing the project, adding that the project was in line with the key priority of rejuvenation of the agricultural sector.

He said the country office would be reinforced with the arrival of additional international and national staff, explaining that it would improve their capacity to assist various ministries and agencies with implementation.
