Labour, civil society groups meet to appraise strike

By Victor Ebimomi

Reporter, Lagos

A meeting to appraise the nationwide strike suspended on Thursday may be convened this week by the Nigeria Labour Congress and civil society groups, even as there are indications that a crack may have occurred in the alliance.

Labour and the Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) organized the strike to force the Federal Government to reverse the price of petroleum products hiked on September 23, 2004. The government however refused to yield ground.

Impeccable source within the labour community said the meeting would also be used to appraise the role of the individual members of the coalition and iron out likely areas that could hamper the successful prosecution of the second phase of the strike.

It was gathered that some members of the coalition were not happy with the manner they were handled during the strike as they complained that they were not fully carried along in the making of some vital decisions while the strike lasted.

The source said despite the fact that Lagos was used as the powerhouse for the strike because of the overwhelming presence of the coalition members there, it was still difficult to take decisions until there are inputs from the NLC office in Abuja.

He said the situation as well as other fundamental areas would be discussed at the meeting so as to avoid what might likely slow down decision making in future.

The Labour and the Civil Society Coalition has given the federal government two weeks to adjust the price failing which it said another round of strike would commence.
