Baring any
hitch, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) will today commence a recall
process of two of his members in the House of Representatives who recently
decamped to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The two
lawmakers, Femi Onimole (Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency) and Dotun
Animashaun (Kosofe Federal Constituency), had in Abuja last week decamped,
saying they were dissatisfied with the way the AD was being run and
pledging their loyalty to the PDP.
But Senator
Tokunbo Afikuyomi, the AD leader in the Senate, has accused the lawmakers
of betrayal of trust, saying that the honorable thing to do after leaving
the party was to resign their seats in the House of Representatives since
according to him, they were elected under the platform of AD. He said a
lot of mobilisation is going on to make sure the affected decampees do not
escape the hammer.
They were
elected because they contested on our platform, Afikuyomi stressed.
When Senators Seye Ogunlewe and Wahab Dosunmu left our party for the PDP,
they were not elected again. They were not. They were elected before
because they were on our platform. These two that decamped cannot cover
themselves on borrowed robes; we want our robes back. We are going to
mobilise our people and commence the process of their recall. We are going
to follow due process as spelt out in the constitution. In their
communities, particularly Ifako Ijaiye, there is a convergence of all
ranks in the society, religious leaders, community leaders, opinion
leaders, students, market women and others to recall them. They have
started collecting signatures.
It will be
resolved once and for all. Because we want what belongs to us and since
they won the seats on the platform of our party, they cannot carry on just
like that. It cannot be business as usual. People voted for AD and not
PDP, despite all the overreaching powers of the federal government.
Afikuyomi
stated that the exit of the lawmakers would not in any way affect the
fortune of the party in the state, adding that there have been allegations
of misconduct levelled against them, which they cannot explain.
People
have seen all these things before. Their exit does not worry us and it
cannot affect the party. We are happy that those who have been selling out
are already finding their way out, said the AD Senate leader.
He added:
In their own case they are already facing disciplinary action in the
party. There are allegations of gross misconduct made against them by
party members. Their defection is an attempt to ambush the disciplinary
process. They were facing panel set up before they defected and
unfortunately for them when they jumped, they jumped into the
ocean.
