Step up
campaigns against HIV/AIDS, others, Ogun govs wife urges
NAWOJ
By Segun
Adeleye, Abeokuta.
Wife of the
Ogun State Governor and Chairperson of Gateway Front Foundation, Mrs
Olufunke Daniel has appealed to the National Association of Women
Journalists (NAWOJ) to step up their campaigns against HIV/AIDS and other
issues that affect children.
Mrs.
Daniel, while speaking at her investiture as NAWOJ Matron in Abeokuta said
concerted efforts should be channelled towards propagating the usefulness
of the Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) to reverse the man-hour lost to
malaria attack by the Nigerian workforce.
Pledging
her support for women empowerment, the wife of the Ogun State governor
challenged the menfolk to cede greater responsibilities to women, arguing
that mothers would always make better administrators. I will not let you
down by this appointment of mine as your matron; you can have my assurance
that I will always be willing to support you morally and materially
.
You will
agree with me that women, particularly Journalists need to re-double
efforts to bring the issues of HIV/AIDS and the Insecticide Treated Net
(ITN) to the front burner of national discourse to achieve results, the
elated Mrs. Daniel advised.
According
to her, any nation intending to maximise its potentials should educate its
women folk because I have been made to realise that for you to educate a
nation, you need to educate women.
Earlier in
her opening remark, President of NAWOJ, Mrs. Toro Oladapo, decried the
percentage of women participation in politics, just as she solicited the
support and understanding of the men folk to empower the ones they prefer
to call the weaker sex.
She posited
that only equal opportunities could engender the much desired national
development, adding that the injection of women of substance by President
Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Gbenga Daniel has impacted positively on
their programmes.
Mrs. Oladapo, who reminisced
on how her mother was short-changed on educational attainment on account
of sex appealed to parents to concentrate on matters affecting children
and women for overall national development.
