Two persons were feared dead as police opened fire on protesting youths in Gusau, Zamfara State capital over the weekend.
The tragedy occurred when a group of youths took to the street to protest over what they called “a breach of trust and total betrayed” by the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Sani for his refusal to offer Ramadan gift as he used to do annually.
According to a source, the decision by the youth to embark on the protest was informed by the alleged distribution of money, clothing materials and grains to a number of women by Gov-ernor Sani.
When they gathered themselves, the youths marched to the state headquarters of the ruling ANPP to lodge their complaint but could not meet the governor.
On their arrival at the ANPP headquarters, the chairman of the party, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari told them that he is not in the position to provide them with the ame-nities and urged them to direct their complaints to the state government.
The protesting youths left the ANPP secretariat to the Government House, but were denied entry by security men attached to the government house.
When they did all they could to gain entrance, but failed, the youths got agit-ated and exchanged words with police and in the process the security reacted with gun shots.
The governor who was inside the government house when the crisis broke out could not come out for fear of being lynched as the you-ths and police engaged in fierce fight.
The chairman of ANPP who was also in the house was smuggled out by secu-rity men who gave him protection into this car.
One of the aggrieved youths who spoke to Daily Trust, bleeding as a result of gunshot explained that they regretted the re-election of Governor Sani. “This man has disappointed us, we sacrificed all our energies, lives and what have you but here we are. This is the result of our sufferings.”
The state commissioner of police, Alhaji Ibrahim P. Machi in whose presence the situation unfolded told newsmen that the police will investigate the mater and “whoever is involved will be brought to book.”
He announced the arrest of some of the youths whom, he described as hoodlums.
