Democracy will blossom in the country if the representatives of the people in government continue to share the aspirat-ions of the people for a better understanding and appreci-ation of their problems towards perfecting tangible solutions, Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Am-inu Masari, has remarked.
Alhaji Masari who made the remarks at the current interactive session initiated by the House of Represe-ntatives in Calabar, stated that by so doing, democratic ideals will assume a universal consideration in the polity.
The speaker explained further that it was based on the need for democracy to be universal; “to move from Abuja to the grassroots,” that the House of Representatives under his leadership emba-rked on zonal tours to all the states of the federation to meet with Nigerians bearing in mind that they were elected to serve the people.
According to him, such moves affords the represen-tatives of the people to be committed to the preserv-ation and promotion of the democratic institutions and culture as well as bringing democracy to the grassroots.
He maintained that the Nigerian project was directly the responsibility of democr-atic leaders to protect, adding that the legislature is one arm of government which when operational, is an indicator that democratic tenets are in practice while its absence is a clear indication that demo-cracy is not available.
Governor Donald Duke had earlier during a courtesy call by the lawmakers, desc-ribed the team as the most formidable received by the state government from the national assembly in recent times, adding that the compli-ments of the Speaker on the state was a tonic to the state government to do more for the people.
Duke also described the event as the maturity of democracy, as the action of the House of Representatives was worthy of emulation.
