Police inspector arrested over alleged vandalism
A police inspector (names withheld), attached to Kano Police Command, has been arrested for alleged involvement in NNPC petroleum pipeline vandalisation.
Sources close to security agents in Kano disclosed that the inspector was arrested, after the pipeline vandalisation at Tariwa Village of Bebeji local government two weeks ago.
The source said about that the vandals drained three tankers of petroleum products through the pipelines.
The vandals first collected two trailers of petrol at the vandalised site along Kaduna-Kano pipeline successfully but the third tanker, which was loaded with 35,000 litres of kerosene, got stuck at the site.
“Seeing that the tanker was stuck, the vandals took to their heels and abandoned the tanker there,” the source added.
Subsequently, the tanker was recovered by the police, who moved it to the state police headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
It was learnt that the syndicate also attempted to break the pipeline, some kilometres away from the first spot but were chased away by the villagers who later alerted the police.
The police, who arrived at the scene, recovered some tools and a Toyota Corolla car left by the vandals.
NAN learnt that the vandal’s action might not be unconnected with the lack of security from the NNPC depot in Kano, as no surveillance was carried out by the NNPC along the pipeline.
The assistant commissioner of police in charge of CID, Alhaji Mohammed Urdi, confirmed the pipeline vandalism, saying, however, that the police inspector was now in police custody as a suspect and that investigation was continuing.
He noted that Divisional Police officers of Kiru, Bebeji, Garunmalam Kura and Bankure local government areas were now intensifying patrol along the pipeline.
Meanwhile, efforts to contact the NNPC depot chief in Kano failed, as the NAN correspondent was not allowed access to the depot chief office.
