...In Kano Bayero commends Mrs. Abacha over Islamic education By Mustapha Isah Kwaru The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero has commended Hajiya Maryam Abacha wife of the former head of state, the late General Sani Abacha on her efforts in promoting Islamic education. Speaking at a graduation ceremony of Muhammad Sani Abacha Islamiyya School in Kano, the emir observed that the efforts of Mrs. Abacha in promoting and propagating Islam through the establishment of Islamiyya schools has no doubt improve the image and reputation of the Abacha family. According to him, the activities of Islamiyya schools established by the former first lady have drastically minimised the rate of ignorance within the community, just as he enjoined other women to emulate such exemplary performance. In his speech, the Dan Masanin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, observed that the former head of state was a devoted Muslim, who dedicated his time and wealth for the development of Islam. He pointed out that, this was in line with Islamic teachings and principles that whosoever wants the blessing of Almighty Allah both in the world and in the thereafter should utilise portion of his wealth and time for the benefit of the religion. Mrs. Abacha earlier expressed delight and appreciation for the recognition and respect showed her by people of the state, saying the establishment of Islamic schools was in line with the recently launched societal reorientation programme tagged “a dai-daita sahu” which was initiated by the government. She, however, applauded all those who contributed financially and morally for the hitch-free and successful completion of the event.
