Ramadan: Okogie wishes Muslims well
Anthony Cardinal Okogie, Catholic Archbishop of Lagos has urged spiritual and temporal leaders to listen to the yearnings of the people to ensure peace and progress.
In a message to mark the beginning of the Muslim fasting, the cardinal appealed to leaders to pursue those things that made for peace and progress.
He asked them to ignore those things, which divide the people and left a sour spot in people’s life and the world.
“Muslim leaders should do things that would improve the lives of their people and ensure that justice prevails, and not what should curtail their freedom,” Okogie said.
The message was signed by the Rev. Fr. Gabriel Osu, Director of Social Communications, Lagos Archdiocese of the Catholic Church.
It advised that “Our leaders both spiritual and temporal should realise that we are accountable to God and to the people.
“They should hearken to the yearnings of the people and not do things, which widen the gulf of hunger, suffering and poverty,” Okogie said.
He also advised the government to respond positively to the people’s yearnings and implement programmes and actions that were of immense benefits to the people.
Drawing an analogy between the Ramadan and the nationwide fuel-price induced strike, Okogie said this was a period for serious spiritual reflections and prayers for peace unity and national spiritual rearmament.
“In this mood of the nation, I call for sober reflection by both the leaders and the led. I appeal to our leaders mostly for reason and compassion,” he said.
He prayed to God to touch the hearts of the nation’s leaders and soften their hearts so they could lead aright and implement good political, social and economic programmes for the good of the people and nation.
