INEC Groans Under N1.2b Debt

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) currently needs about N1.2 billion to offset various debts and to save it from going under, a dependable source has said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered in Abuja at the weekend that lawyers handling INEC cases at various tribunals have threatened to withdraw their appearances.

The lawyers said the commission had failed to pay for litigation, witness allowances and other expenses put at N314 million.

In the past few months, the commission is said to have experienced the frequent disconnection of vital services from NEPA, NITEL and water boards for its inability to pay about N86.53 million owed those agencies.

Similarly, the commission has difficulty paying the rent for office accommodation at the WAEC building, which serves as its headquarters annex, 18 state offices and 342 local government offices, totalling N96 million.

Already, INEC has been served eviction notices for the non-payment of various rents.

Accumulated indebtedness for the residential accommodation of national commissioners and other INEC officials is put at N86.53 million, while computing and communication equipment require N240 million to maintain.

The commission needs another N60 million to keep its operational vehicles nationwide going, said the source, adding that N42 million is required for auditors' fees.

The maintenance and repair of office buildings at all levels of the commission would gulp N98 million.

According to the source: ``In spite of several letters complaining of the paucity of funds to the President, the directive to release funds by the ministry of finance fell on deaf ears.

``The commission has written four letters to the minister reminding her of the President's directive, but she has not taken any remedial action.''
