You Can't Dictate to the North, Group Tells Lamido

A group of northern youths under the aegis of Amal-gamated Youths Forum in Kano has described former Foreign Affairs Minister, Alhaji Sule Lamido, as unfit for the line-up of northern leaders who are working towards the country's leadership positions in 2007.

Their position is coming as a reaction to media reports where Lamido was quoted as dismissing the aspiration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Gen. Buba Marwa to succeed President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2007 as undesirable, while asking the north to broaden its search for a presidential aspirant other than the present three contenders.

The group which is an amalgamation of over 150 youth associations in Kano, and presently rooting for the candidacy of former Lagos State Military Administ-rator, Gen. Marwa in the 2007 presidential election stated that Lamido's statement was "not only undesirable but also made in bad faith."

In a statement signed by their chairman, Yusuf Alhassan and secretary, General Auwalu Abdullahi, the youths who viewed the former minister's statement as the voice of an irrelevant politician seeking survival asked him "to keep his misleading advice borne out of a parochial interest."

The group pointed out that Lamido's claim that Gen. Marwa is a "political orphan whose focus is unclear" shows that the former minister "has virtually lost touch with the realities of the north, present day Nigeria and political developments in the country."

"How we wish Lamido can still sit back and recollect how he failed to offer the best of service to this country as a minister; rather than taking it upon himself to advise the north on who to vote as president in 2007," the group said.
