Ex-Speaker Seeks Special Ecological Fund
From Saka Ibrahim in Gombe
Former Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly and member of House of Representatives Hon. Usman Bayero has advocated for special ecological funds for Gombe State from the Federal Government.
Bayero, representing Dukku/ Nafada federal constituency of the state in an interview said the state needed urgent assistance because it is confronted with both ecological problem and flood.
According to him, Gombe was in a valley and that the erosion problem is beyond the financial capability of the state government.
Said Bayero "The flood that occurred in August this year was a disaster because we have never experienced this type of flood before, not only in Gombe but throughout the state. We have gone round so many states we have not seen where within a very few hours flood causing this type of problem."
The lawmaker who is the deputy chairman of the house committee on governmental affairs and the house special committee on Gombe flood promised that his committee would present a good case to the executive arm of government so that Gombe could be declared a flood prune town.
"We want the state to be getting money directly from the federation account to take care of the flood."
Bayero also ruled out the possibility of relocating Gombe at this austere period because it would involve several billions but that the Federal Government could assist with enough funds.
"The state government is saying N7 billion can solve the problem. If N7 billion can do that, how much do we require to relocate Gombe? May be, hundreds of billions. So, I think direct funding of the ecological and flood problem of the state is the most appropriate thing," Bayero stressed.
It would be recalled that the recent flood in Gombe claimed about 20 lives and destroyed 1,500 houses.
According to a special report, 484 families were displaced.
