'How to Get Accurate Head Count'
From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo
National Population Commi-ssion (NPC) at the weekend declared that in order to avoid the mistakes of the past at getting an accurate census figure, it would adopt "de facto" system of head-count in the forthcoming national head count slated for year 2005.
The NPC commissioner in charge of Osun State, Dr Duro Famojuro dropped the hint to newsmen at Ilesa on Friday while answering reporters questions.
According to him, "In the process, if we don't see you, we don't count you and you can't expect that the figure will just be quoted for any head count."
He said that, "If you available you will be counted and the idea of using the kind of past stereotype of head count will not be accepted this time around."
He added that, "we are counting people and counting houses at the same time, so if you have 20 building and they said you have one million people living on them, then, that is not true."
His words "what we are doing this time around is to see for ourselves == you see if yourself, and
"Dr Famojuro stated further that a total sum of N40 billion will be required by the commission, stressing that international agencies like America and British governments have been coming to assist us."
"They are coming to us not necessarily in cash but like the procurement of equipment, vehicles among others to the NPC," he maintained.
While pointing out that the NPC has commenced door-to-door enlightenment campaign on the need to take part in the exercise, Dr Famojuro stated that all levels of governments in the country and the National Assembly members have to support the NPC so as to have a hitch-free national census in year 2005.
'We have an advantage now, we are now under the civilian era, we have all the 3 levels of government in place, the role of the National Assembly, the state and the local government chairmen is very crucial as they are more nearer to the grassroots," he stressed.
Dr Famojuro then appealed to all the Nigerians to support the commission in its efforts at providing an accurate census figure for the nation.
