Engineers Battle to Salvage NITEL's Cables
By Tayo Ajakaye

NITEL's engineers working round the clock have made substantial progress in the repair of the company's optic fibre cable which was uprooted last week by unknown persons.

The cable which links NITEL's new headquarters with the company's Wuse exchange was cut some meters from the headquarters thereby disrupting services to the office.

The DGM, Corporate Comm-unications, NITEL, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo who spoke with THISDAY confirmed the vandalisation of the cable but added that company's engineers would repair the damaged cable by the end of the week and restore all interrupted services.

Ekundayo also confirmed the arrest by the Police of some of the suspected vandals of the NITEL cable. He said the arrested suspects are making useful statements to the Police.

Only in March ths year, the international sub-marine cable that carries communications traffic out of the country part-owned by the Nigerian Telecommuni-cations Limited was damaged in the high seas. It was the first such high profile vandalisation of the cable that connects the African coast to the rest of the world.

THISDAY had reported exclusively then that the cable, which is responsible for more than 90 per cent of the international traffic in and out of the country from all operators, was cut down about 35 km from the Lagos landing point.

Unlike the present situation then, Ekundayo had told THISDAY that the company did not suspect sabotage. The DGM who would not volunteer any informtion on why anyone would want to vandalise NITEL Optic fibre cable however said the identity of those behind the sabotage would be made known by the time the Police concludes its investigation.
