8000 Nigerian Doctors in Diaspora - Minister

Minister for Health, Prof Eyitayo Lambo has disclosed that over 8,000 Nigerian doctors are currently practising in the United Kingdom (UK) and United States of America.
He said the Federal Government has begun moves to draw from the expertise and goodwill of Nigerian doctors resident in the two countries.
The minister who was on a facility tour of the Otunba Tunwase National Paediatric Centre, Ijebu-Ode owned by Chief Subomi Balogun, pointed out that the efforts formed part of the seven-point reform agenda of government on the health sector.
He disclosed also that his meeting with the over five thousand doctors under the aegies of Association of Nigerian Physicians in Los Angeles has started yielding result in terms of importation of medical-equipment.
He added that three thousand medical personnel in the United Kingdom have equally signified intention to provide similar assistance. The minister applauded the visioner of the referral institute for children, Chief Subomi Balogun for pioneering public-private sector participation in health care delivery.
While admitting that the National health system was weak, Lambo added that necessary assistance would be given corporate entities and privileged individuals that run medical institutions in the country, notably in the area of import duty waiver on equipment.
According to him, it has now become imperative to find, a way of reducing the burden of diseases and conditions of maternal mortality, malaria and tuberculosis among other diseases in our society.
According to him, government assistance is necessary to re-double the confidence of international agencies and countries in assisting the centre with equipment and consultancy services of medical experts.
He disclosed that already, an Israeli non-governmental organisation (NGO) and interested groups, from the United States and Britain have visited the projects to assess areas of collaboration.
