An Abuja-based Islamic scholar, Ustaz Musa Olaofe, has described the on-going Ramadan fasting as a good instrument for good health and long life.
Olaofe, who is the missionary of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria (ADS), stated this at the Annual Ramadan lecture of Islamic Youth League (IYL), Abuja chapter.
In the lecture titled: "Fasting: A Panacea for Good Health and Seeking Allah's Mercy," Olaofe listed gains of fasting to human's health.
He said Allah, who prescribed fasting for Muslims at least once in a year, knew that it was good for the body as testified to by medical researchers.
The Islamic scholar, who cited several examples to support his claims, added that fasting was a weapon against all odds.
"Fasting is a period of devotion, when Muslims should wake up at night and pray unto Allah thus training the body and the soul," he stressed.
Quoting several portions of the Qur'an and sayings of Prophet Mohammed, the scholar said fasting should not only be restricted to Ramadan alone but should be carried out on all the days prescribed by the Prophet especially Mondays and Thursdays.
He reminded Muslims that apart from the spiritual benefits of fasting, there are several other advantages that a devotee would derive from it.
Earlier, the chairman of Islamic Youth League, Alhaji Kamorudeen Bamidele, said the lecture was organised annually in order to contribute to the spiritual and mental development of Muslims.
Bamidele added Muslim that "good manners, politeness, kindness and keeping away from things which are not good for social relations were also parts of the Islamic code of conduct."
In his opening remarks, the chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Adebayo Yusuf, urged all Muslims to contribute generously towards the completion of the society's mosque.
Yusuf noted that the reward for such activities would be manifold during the month of fasting.
The lecture was attended by a large number of Muslims, including lawmakers and top government functionaries among others.
