Beware of Impersonators, FERMA Warns Public
Lagos
Management of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has warned members of the public to be wary of unscrupulous people impersonating themselves as the official of the agency and ollecting money on the highways.
In a statement by the Agency's Information Officer, Mr. Timothy Oyedeji, these persons have been going around posing as staff of FERMA to dupe unsuspecting members of the public.
"These persons, apart from not being officials or agents of the agency, have illegally engaged insinuating traffic offences, forging identifications cards and papers including letterhead and uniforms," he said.
The agency added that these impostors extort money from the public, especially in Lagos State, where innocent members of the public were asked to pay various levies and fines.
He noted that "we view this as embarrassing not only to us at the agency but to Nigeria as a whole."
The agency however reiterated that its mandate as stipulated in the Act of National Assembly, which strictly tasks it with the repairs and maintenance of Federal highways only.
"The agency does not have the responsibility to, and does not engage in road and traffic management or enforcement of traffic rules and regulations," it stressed, saying "the only organisation empowered to do this is FRSC."
Oyedeji urged members of the public to hearken to the call of the Minister of Works, Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe in arresting and reporting persons engaged in this nefarious activity to the law enforcement agents.
FERMA advised the public to reject the payment of any levy or fine demanded by any FERMA official or anyone claiming to be one and to apprehend and hand over such persons to the law enforcement authorities.
"Whoever makes any payment to any FERMA official as fine or levy for any traffic offence in any part of Nigeria does so at his/her own peril as both the giver of an illegal levy or fine is as criminally culpable as receiver," the statement added.
