And, so, Nigeria broke new ground on Monday in the United Kingdom as it produced the first African woman magistrate in the historic county of Bedfordshire. America has the largest concentration of Nigerians living abroad, with an estimated six million in Yankee country, followed by the United Kingdom, their favourite holiday destination, and where several of them have achieved academic success, among others, and own businesses as well as homes. There, Olubunmi Olukemi Sinmidele Adedeji, a lawyer and mother of three made Nigeria proud as she was sworn in among several others at Luton Crown Court, where she will be adjudicating, in a tradition dating back to the 12th century. The entrance of the court�s modernist building, one of the busiest benches in the UK, became the venue for a series of photographs between the new jurist and a posse of admirers and well-wishers. She was warmly serenaded by her husband, Yemi, her children, Mayowa, Jacqueline and Elizabeth as well as her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo Ade-Adedeji, who had flown in from Lagos five days earlier for the historic event.   Copyright� 2004.
