The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is expected to meet on Tuesday to deliberate and decide on date and nature of the next phase of strike and protests, should the federal government fail to revert to the former pump prices of petroleum products.
A statement signed by the head of information of the NLC, Comrade Owei Lakemfa, yesterday said, the 180 labour leaders expected at the meeting would analyse reports on government’s response to the public demands for the reversal of the September 23, 2004 fuel price increases among other things.
The statement said the meeting would be attended by all national officers of the NLC, presidents, general secretaries and treasurers of all industrial unions as well as chairmen and secretaries of all states and FCT councils of the congress.
The NLC had last week give the federal government 14 day-grace within which to revert to the old pump prices of petroleum products, or face another round of strike action.
President of the NLC, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole who gave the charge in Abuja, said if the gover-nment fails to ensure price reversal within the stipulated time, the coalition of the NLC will meet and fix a date to resume fresh strike action.
He said that the NLC will sustain strikes and protests in phases until the prices of petroleum products are reverted to their pre-September 23, 2004 level, as demanded by the Nigerian masses and their representatives at the National Assembly.
“We cannot in the light of our previous experience where once a strike is suspended, the federal government goes back and refuses to dialogue. This time around, we have decided to sustain the strike in phases until the issue of price reversal is achieved and the long term commitment to price stability is worked out so that Nigeria can break off this vicious cycle of fuel price increases,” he said.
