1000 Nigerians Deported from Libya By Ndubuisi Francis No fewer than 1000 Nigerian deportees have arrived the country from Libya in the past one week as the North African country is said to be clamping down on aliens without valid resident documents. The deportees started arriving the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos in chartered flights from the beginning of the week, according to Immigration sources. THISDAY gathered that the deportees were mostly Nigerians who had taken unconventional routes to enter European countries but got holed up in Libya. According to Immigration sources, the deportees were from various states of the country, some of whom may have been stranded in Libya for months and even years. Some of the deportees at the international wing of the Murtala Airport, Lagos yesterday declined interviews when approached by newsmen. Investigations revealed that while most of them were said to have either left for their various states or tried to put up with relations in Lagos since arriving the country, some of those still at the airport were those deported yesterday or without the necessary funds to travel home or to acquaintances in Lagos. It was gathered yesterday that even when some of the deportees had managed to make some savings while there, they were not allowed by the Libyan authorities to take their funds and belongings before deportation. The deportation of Nigerians from Libya is not a new phenomenon. It has in fact been intensified in the past few years.
