NCP Wants Fani-kayode Sacked From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja National Conscience Party (NCP) has called on President Oluse-gun Obasanjo to immediately relieve Chief Femi Fani-Kayode of his job as his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, over remarks against Nigeria's reknowned novelist, Professor Chinua Achebe. A statement released yesterday by NCP Chair-man, Dr Osagie Obayu-wana, to THISDAY in Benin-City, said the presidential aide has displayed pettiness and ignorance of the responsibility of his office by the manner of his reaction to Achebe's rejection of a national award. The NCP demand, Obayuwana noted, "is premised on our belief that the said special assistant has reduced matters of public affairs to such a disgraceful and unprincipled level that the kind of assistance he can now render to Mr President is such that can lead this country to the abyss." The party observed that Fani-Kayode appears intent on pulling cotton wools over the president's eyes concerning the current socio-economic situation in the country, which could reduce or foreclose a realistic approach to arresting the dangerous situation by the president. "The rejection of the national award by Prof. Chinua Achebe is a development that ought to make any right thinking government officer to sober up and engage in deep reflection," the statement said, but regretted that Fani-Kayode's "play on words dangerously moves the president further and further away from the reality members of the Nigerian public deal with on a day-to-day basis." To say "Achebe is not deserving of being a Nigerian" is illogical, it concluded while noting that the rejection ought to elicit critical self-appraisal by the president.
