Darfur: Peace Talks Kick Off With Consultations in Abuja From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja The second round of Darfur peace talks resumed in Abuja yesterday informally as consultations between different parties begun with the African Union. Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdul Rahim Ahmed Khalil speaking with THISDAY said after the short opening session on Thursday, informal consultations were underway on Friday. According to the Ambassador the protocol of the humanitarian crisis in the region which was discussed and finalized at the last round is ready, while discussions will also be held on the issues of security. Also on the agenda are issues of politics, economic and social matters. On the issue of a cease-fire agreement, the Sudanese envoy said the agreement was signed in April and its implementation is monitored by a joint committee that meets at the sidelines and will submit its report at the end of the meeting. The Sudanese Government delegation is headed by the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Majdoub Elkalifa and also has five ministers and 12 senior staff from different departments and ministries. The Sudanese Liberation Movement and Justice and Equality Movement are also well represented at the meeting . Meanwhile the European Union is likely to fund the expanded African Union Darfur Force which is to monitor, observe and contribute to peace in the region to the tune of $220 million.
