Benue Govt Threatens 23 LGs for Unremitted Tax From Daniel Ior in Makurdi Benue State government has threatened to drag its 23 local governments to court over withholding remittance of the pay-as-you-earn tax taxes to the state. Special Adviser on revenue generation Chief Enyi Obande made the position of the government known during an interactive session with revenue collectors, treasurers and tax consultants in Makurdi, the state capital. But the council chairmen allege that the state was also yet to release to them the 10% of revenue accrueing to the state as required by law. According to the state, the local governments have for the last two years failed to remit the appropriate taxes and have consequently denied the state huge sums of investable funds. He also cautioned the local governments and their revenue officers against delays in remitting revenues collected for the state, saying such conduct would no longer be tolerated. Government he explained "has created an appropriate, efficient and effective environment for enhanced revenue collection. Government according to him has released funds for repair and maintenance of vehicles. The government has in addition engaged consultants and promulgated internal revenue laws, all with the view of facilitating the unhindered revenue collection and remittance by appropriate organs to appropriate authorities." Some of the chairmen said while they do not contest the payment of the pay-as-you-earn to the coffers of the state it would be proper if the state on its part would also be magnanimous enough to fulfil her own financial obligations to the councils.
