Medical Expert Advises Nigerians on Cancer

A medical practitioner and founder of The Bloom Cancer Care and Support Centre, Dr. (Mrs) Kofoworola Orija, has called on all Nigerians most especially women to regularly go for body examination as the only way to discover abnormal growths which often lead to cancer.
Orija, in a chat with THISDAY said October marks the 20th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month, describing the campaign as a major boost which has helped to push for better awareness. She observed that a lot of work could still be done to inform the public about the disease, saying cancer is no respecter of any person.
Orija said breast cancer is a common disease today in Nigeria among women and added that women must be aware of this. She stressed that though emphasis is laid on breast cancer for this month, counselling and enlightenment programmes are underway to enlighten Nigerians on other forms of cancer like prostate, lung, skin, ovarian, liver bone, leukemia etc. This, according to her, means getting to know how your breast looks and feels normally.
The medical doctor explained five simple points of breast awareness. These include knowing what is normal for you; knowing what changes to look for and feel simply looking at it and feeling the breast; reporting any changes to a proper medical expert without delay; and attending routine breast screening after the age of 50.
Orija said her non-governmental organisation has been doing its best to educate Nigerians on the nature of the disease and how it can be prevented or cured when detected earlier. The Bloom would on Thursday October 28 organise a market rally at Sura Shopping Complex.
Unlike HIV/AIDS, cancer has enjoyed little or no attention from the nation's government in view of its devastating effects on the society. The Bloom is planning to foot a bill in the National Assembly to encourage government not only in giving adequate attention to the disease but also in facilitating a national policy on cancer.
