Sports Ministry Denies Confronting FIFA

Ministry of Sports and Social Development has denied reports in the papers that the Minister Col. Musa Mohammed (rtd) has accused football's governing body, FIFA of being mischievous by insisting the country changes its football statutes before December 1 or face an international ban.
Addressing a press briefing yesterday, the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Chikezie, described the report as widely incorrect, stressing that it was obvious some people were bent on sponsoring and syndicating stories that would put Nigeria in the black book of FIFA as a result of the threat already hanging over Nigeria.
"We have noticed some inaccuracy widely reported in the papers today. In many of the Nigerian newspapers today various headlines like 'FIFA is mischievious - Sports Minister', 'Sports Minister blast FIFA', 'Nigeria Snubs FIFA', 'Sports Minister Query's FIFA', 'Sports Mini-ster Accuses FIFA of Mischief', 'You Are Mischie-vous Mohammed Tells FIFA', 'Minister Attacks FIFA' and so on and so forth.
"The Minister is not confronting FIFA. he is not attacking FIFA and he is not snubbing FIFA in anyway.
The Minister has great respect for FIFA and believes in what FIFA is doing. In the world of today where tension of terrorism and attacks are rampant, FIFA on the contrary brings joy to the world community through footbal, then it is doing a good job.
"The Minister says the government of Nigeria would work with FIFA to ensure that its aim which is that Nigerian football be run in a way that it would be result oriented, in a way that it would enhance the joy in the heart of the people and it would be achieved.
He said with a view to having Nigeria's football synchronised the minister set up a committee to review the desirability or otherwise of decree 101. "Somebody who did that should be given tribute", he said.
Chikezie said already the Ministry was doing all it can to ensure accelerated and speedy study of the report and the convention of a stakeholders workshop to review the report and submit a draft to the presidency which will then forward to the National Assembly.
