UMUAHIA — A GROUP of human rights activists based in Abia State has indicated intention to initiate a process to recall the Senate President, Chief Adolphus Wabara as a way of checking what it called "the executive lawlessness of President Olusegun Obasanjo."
In a letter addressed to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia State, leader of the League of Eastern Activists and Democrats (LEAD), Comrade Chidi Nwosu and secretary, Miss Amaka Biachi who claim to be representing 65 democratic forces in the east, said that following the admission of incompetence in running the National Assembly by the Senate President, he should resign from office or be prepared to face recall from the senate.
Among issues which the group accused the Senate president of failing to handle competently include:
•abduction of Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State and subsequent withdrawal of his security details;
•unlawful arrest and detention of unarmed members of MASSOB by the police;
•cClampdown on the Insider Weekly Magazine by the State Security Service (SSS),
•politically motivated suspension of Slok Airline;
• invasion of Abia State secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by those loyal to the Senate President;
•incessant increase in the pump prices of petroleum products;
•sale of public companies in the guise of privatisation, liberalisation and deregulation;
•bastardisation of the educational system in the country which has led to commercialisation of education.
According to the activists, the group has already mobilised 3570 volunteers to assist it in the exercise and urged INEC to register from Abia South which is the Senate President’s zone, adding that this would enable it start the recall process.
Vanguard recalls that the people of Ukwa Federal constituency which is Wabara’s constituency have already started the process to recall their representative in the House of Representatives, Mr. Chinonyere Macebuh over alleged incompetence. Both Wabara and Machebuh belong to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
