Ban on importation: Atiku makes case for local industry

By Chinyere Amalu
Saturday, October 23, 2004

ABUJA—VICE President Atiku Abubakar has emphasized that the ban of some imported goods by the present administration is a weapon for expanding the frontiers of industrial knowledge, production and the national economy.

The Vice President who stated this in Abuja at the closing ceremony of Techno-Expo 2004 organized by Raw Material Research and Development Council (RMRDC), said this is to give room for the development of the nation’s local industries, scientists and technologists as well as the development of Research and Development (R&D).

According to the Vice-President, the Council through this biennial programme has assisted in harnessing our local resources for industrial use, encourage local engineers and fabricators in the production of processing equipment and components, evident in the local processing of industrial grade Kaolin, phosphate, pharmaceutical grade Kaolin, Hydrated lime, talc etc".

The Vice-President stressed that there is no better way to commercialize research findings than what is obtainable and witnessed in the past few days of the Techno-Exposition.

"I am encouraged with the level of skill and witty invention exhibited by our technicians, machine designers and fabricators as evident in what is exhibited during this technology exposition. I wish to emphasize that this country has the capacity to transform the existing primary mineral and agricultural products into intermediate goods", he noted.
