ANPP NEC overrules govs
Backs Buhari
NDIDI OKAFOR,
Abuja
RISING from a
marathon emergency meeting in Abuja, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of
the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) overturned the decision of its seven
governors to retain Chief Don Etiebet as the partys National Chairman and said
they had no powers to return him.
The NEC also confirmed that some of the
governors of the party were planning to "decamp to PDP and this is unfortunate".
Reading an eight-point resolution of the
meeting, Gen Jerry Useni said that neither the Board of Trustees (BOT) headed by
Admiral Augustus Aikhomu nor the Governors Forum had the right to decide for the
party especially on vexed issues like the ongoing crisis in the party.
He described as "unfortunate" the role
played by some of the partys governors and added that it was condemnable that
"some of them are planning to decamp to the PDP.
He reiterated that he was still the Acting
chairman of ANPP and said the Board of Trustees cannot fix NEC meeting in
Maiduguri.
He noted that contrary to speculations,
they were in support of the court case currently being pursued by Major-General
Muhammadu Buhari against the election of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Useni said that eventhough the NEC
attended by 27 state chairmen of the party, appreciated the efforts of Admiral
Aikhomu in trying to resolve the crisis, it was not in his powers to fix NEC
meeting.
Thus he said that NEC has resolved as
follows
"We regret in its entirety the scheduling
of our partys NEC meeting by the Forum of ANPP Governors and Admiral Augustus
Aikhomu slated for 26th and 27th November, 2004 in Maiduguri, Borno State as
same was done without the approval of the NEC in consonance with the partys
constitution in Article 141(ii).
That the present zoning formula of the
party is not and will not be tampered with in anyway whatsoever..."
NEC the reiterates its earlier position
suspending Chief Don Etiebet, the former National chairman of the party and
calls on all government organs and members of the party to disregard any orders
emanating from him".
