Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop Tuesday in Umuahia, World Bank�s Task team leader in Nigeria, Dr Folusho Okunmadewa, said the fund would be released to the state in November this year. According to him, World Bank realised that the N600 million released to the state at the inception of the programme in 2001 was insufficient and would be exhausted before 2006, the target year. He said apart from the N300m, Abia would need about N850 million to meet up with demand for projects in the state. The World Bank representative, who said out of the 1,200 micro projects under community based poverty reduction project in the country, that Abia State has 150 of such projects in about 120 communities. He noted that another stage of the project called CPRP II would focus on the local government in the affected states. He however added that the benefitting communities would still be incharge of the fund and choice of project. Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, who declared the workshop open, said his administration had put in place a framework aimed at fighting poverty, which he said poses a big threat to human existence. � 2004 @ Champion Newspapers Limited (All Right Reserved).
