Who
forged the signature of Archbishop of Lagos Diocese, Cardinal Anthony
Olubunmi Okogie on two different
cheques and attempted to withdraw N5,650,000 from his private account?
This is the knotty question the
police at the Area ‘A’ Command, Lion Building Police Station, Lagos
are now asking Magistrate Martins Owunmi to solve as the police hauled
31-year-old Dike Uche Nwosu before the court, accusing him of complicity in the
crime.
Prosecuting Police Inspector Peter
Nwangwu alleged in charge B/116/2004 that between September 24 and 27, this
year at Union Bank Plc building, Lagos, the accused person conspired with
others now on the run to commit forgery, an offence punishable with
imprisonment under section 156 of the criminal code.
The prosecution alleged that with intent to steal, the accused person
and his gang forged a Union Bank
of Nigeria Plc cheque No. 0371030011424 and signature of Archibshop Okogie and
attempted to use the forged instrument to withdraw N2,050,000 from the personal
account of Okogie.
Again the prosecution alleged that
the accused person and his accomplices forged the signature of Okogie on a
Platinum Bank Limited Cheque No. 2243871 for N3,600,000.
The prosecution said by this action,
the accused and those on the run, attempted to defraud Union Bank of Nigeria
Plc, Balogun branch and Archbishop Olubunmi Okogie of N2, 050,000.
Nwosu denied the allegations by
pleading not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two
sureties in like sum.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for November 15,
when the cardinal is expected to testify in court.
It is a high profile case which is bound to generate
interest considering the personality
and institution involved.
