NCP calls for Fani-Kayode’s sack

Piqued by his unguarded utterances on vital national issues, the Special Assistant to
President Olusegun Obasanjo on Public Affairs, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, has drawn
the ire of the National Conscience Party (NCP) which called for his immediate
sack.
In particular, the NCP is angered by the
vituperations which Fani-Kayode
poured on renowned novelist, Professor
Chinua Achebe on the latter’s rejection of the national honours
award.
National chairman of the party, Dr. Osagie Obayuwana
who made the position of the party known said the Special Assistant had reduced
matters of public affairs to disgraceful and unprincipled level. “The kind of assistance he now renders to the president is such
that can lead the country to the abyss”, Obayuwana adding,
“Fani-Kayode’s play on words dangerously moves the president
further away from the reality members of the Nigerian public face on a day to
day basis.”
The rejection of the national award by Professor Achebe, the NCP National Chairman
noted, is a development that ought to make any right-thinking government
officer sober and engage in deep reflection.
According to him, it is a clear message from
Professor Achebe to Mr. President to engage in critical self-appraisal in his
management of Nigeria’s collective affairs but, “unfortunately,
Fani-Kayode’s reaction has the effect of moving the president away from the path of rectitude, to
obstinacy and mindless dogmatism.”
The National Conscience Party boss further stated
that, “We are alarmed and wonder what logic informed Femi-Kayode’s
conclusion that perhaps Professor Achebe is not deserving of being a Nigerian.
Obayuwana said that a greater level of decency and
commitment to higher ideals was usually expected of the occupier of such a post
as Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs. He said Fani-Kayode had an infantile
play on words under pretext of being loyal to Mr. President, even where such poses grave
risk to the public at large.
